I’ve been toying with a concept that I borrowed from Firefly (and by extension, Captain Harlock). It’s a sci-fi concept, but I’ve seen it in paranormal shows too
Firefly has nine main characters, but the creator always says there are ten. He specifically denotes that the tenth character is the Firefly-class ship, Serenity itself, because of how central it is and how much the main characters care about it
Captain Harlock has the same concept where his ship, Arcadia, is also another character. This actually holds a shred of truth to it – his best friend’s mind/spirit (depending on the version) is possessing the ship’s engine/computer
As for paranormal, cities like Gravity Falls or Amity Park comes to mind – where all the while, they imply the area is sort of, alive, and aware, and a bit of a magnet for strangeness
I extend this to BSD? With how much everyone, even the mafia, cares about the city, and with just HOW MUCH happens there (virtue of plot, I know, but still!)
I think it is a character of its own!
Alive, in that weird way that Serenity is
Because the Yokohama love isn’t borrowed from a literary concept from one of the authors like basically everything else is
It is its own thing. I guess the creators must really love it there, and that’s special
