YES I’m glad you agree with me!! As I said in my post– would I enjoy a Dazai as silly and sexy sounding in English as he is in Japanese thanks to Mamoru’s amazing performance? Yes, of course! But what are the chances of that? Give me Southern accents for the Guild, Brooklyn accents for the Mafia, and Vic Mignogna for Dazai. What could POSSIBLY go wrong!

Port Mafia Week 2017 – Day Seven: Free Day!
j’adore mon joli mari
I always figured Mori isn’t completely heartless… First and foremost to him is to protect the Port Mafia and its operations, which extends to the people working for him. And while he’s not unwilling to sacrifice one of his own (Oda being prime example) he’s doing it for the good of the Mafia in its entirety.
In the onsen audio dramas, he sends Akutagawa to the hot springs so he can rest up and heal, making it clear he’s concerned for the well-being of one of his top agents. He tasks Chuuya to make sure Akutagawa does indeed get in the bath, so he really wants Akutagawa to take care of himself.
In episode eleven (and the corresponding manga chapter) he does somewhat frighten Higuchi into thinking that perhaps she’s nothing but a liability, but before he starts on that he insists that even in the Mafia, “effort comes first, results second” and commends Akutagawa’s team for doing their best despite failing.
He’s shown to care for, worry about, and spoil Elise endlessly, and for Kouyou’s sake spared Kyouka. He’s seen drinking and talking amicably with Kouyou and Chuuya, and being very kind with Atsushi when they were trapped by Lucy.
Does Mori care for Dazai? I’d argue maybe just a little bit? As a protégé? He takes him under his wing and trains him to be just as ruthless and perhaps wanted Dazai to succeed him one day? And Dazai is said to be a little too scary and a little too powerful… Mori doesn’t enjoy having Dazai against him but having Dazai under his control might be an excellent opportunity. Perhaps by little shows of kindness he manipulated Dazai into some sense that there was a home for him in the Mafia?
All in all I think it boils down to this – Mori is still only human and perhaps does care, but even if not, Dazai’s loyalty is a prize to be won.
