Hello!!!!! I must confess I don’t watch a lot of anime but I’ll try!

I’ll be honest the first character to pop into my head was Rin Matsuoka from Free! on entirely superficial reasons… Literally the only things they have in common is their voice actor, Mamoru Miyano, and playing rock paper scissors with a character voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya (Dazai with Kunikida, and Rin with Sousuke, respectively.) Otherwise they’re nothing alike in either plot, personality, or past!

I also thought of Tamaki Suoh from Ouran High School Host Club, but again only on superficial account, they share a voice actor and have a penchant for being melodramatic and flirting with women in their own over-the-top ways.

A character with a complicated past I think would definitely be Harlock, who in some anime variants used to be on the side of the villains for a long time, working for them, but once his best friend died he switched sides and became a rogue… Of course, in another version, he switched sides, then his best friend died, but his best friend dying is always a constant and a very significant impact on Harlock’s worldview and experiences. (Similar to Oda and Dazai, Tochiro and Harlock were the best of friends and the latter in each pair always holds them in their heart.)

However I must warn you it is an old-timey retro scifi anime from the seventies with almost ten reiterations over the years, and its vibe certainly isn’t anywhere near the same as BSD’s! I would recommend it though as it is a favorite of mine.

I did a little research and googled around for a similar character, looks like Nice from Hamatora is incredibly like him – even has brown hair plus bandages – and it takes place in the same city too, with an almost perfect premise match!

The impulsive half of the duo along with his partner. He is constantly broke for money, partly due to the fact that he doesn’t care about the cost of a job request more than what it entails. He is a bit absent minded at times with little regard for whatever situation he is immediately in. Despite his seemingly carefree nature, he is a genius thinker and able to quickly assess information.

The plot of said anime is as follows:

The ability to create miracles is not just a supernatural phenomenon; it is a gift which manifests in a limited number of human beings. “Minimum,” or small miracles, are special powers that only selected people called “Minimum Holders” possess. The detective agency Yokohama Troubleshooting, or Hamatora for short, is composed of the “Minimum Holder PI Duo,” Nice and Murasaki. Their office is a lone table at Cafe Nowhere, where the pair and their coworkers await new clients.

I may have found a new anime for myself to watch as well, haha!

Dazai is always walking around with injuries! Because 1) he keeps trying to kill himself 2) he has a dangerous job whether Mafia or Agency and 3) he’s a naturally clumsy person, as we find out when Oda asks where his injuries came from in the light novel and Dazai goes on a tangent about the shenanigans he’d been involved in lately.

I haven’t actually noticed him touching his arm lately and I feel bad about it! If you could show me examples I’d love that >:0 but uh in chapter twenty-six Dazai lands himself and Ango in a car crash, subsequently in chapter twenty-eight we see him with his arm in a sling…

And then continue to see him with a sling for several chapters more! I also always figured he didn’t need it and/or kept it longer than he had to but perhaps this more recent arm injury is why Dazai keeps touching his arm…? Oh and it’s very possible that since mafia!Dazai had the same arm in a sling that it was easy to have it be injured again.
